1. Do you want to include a family photo?

For some people it’s completely non-negotiable: a family Christmas card simply must be a photo card. What else would be the point? Other people are more interested in finding a cute illustrated card. That gives you the option of including a photo (or a few photos!) with the card that can be framed but are separate from the card itself, or choosing not to include photos at all (after all, social media shares your photos just fine). Either of these options are completely fine, but you should know before you go in what you’re looking for. Don’t buy photo cards if you don’t have a photo you want to use on it, and don’t buy cards that don’t have space for a photo if that’s important to you.

2. Do you want to mention Christmas?

Maybe the thought of a Christmas card that isn’t all about Christmas seems crazy to you, but maybe you don’t want to overdo it. Maybe you have friends who don’t celebrate Christmas or who have different traditions. Whatever the case, decide how direct you want your language to be. Should it say ‘Christmas’ all over it, or should it just reference it with text like ‘Merry and Bright’ or ‘Deck the Halls’? Perhaps you’d like it to say ‘Happy Holidays’ or maybe it shouldn’t have text at all and should just feature some mistletoe, lights or a snow man. It’s entirely up to you! You can always write ‘Merry Christmas’ inside the card later, but there’s nothing you can do if it’s printed on the card itself.

3. What style of design do you love?

Some people are all about cute cartoon-y illustrations, others love the look of hand lettering or typography. Some people love the feel of a watercolour wash, and others like bold colour blocking. If you have some idea of the style you love, you can narrow things down quickly. Of course, maybe you have no idea. That’s totally fine! Sometimes it’s best to just browse without a specific style in mind and see what speaks to you. But knowing what you like and don’t like can make it easier for you.

Of course, none of this is about setting up rigid expectations and scouring shops online and off until you find something that fits what you had imagined. That’s never an efficient or fruitful way to shop! But it can help make it easier to find something that’s right for you if you have some idea of what your needs and preferences are before you find yourself falling in love with something that doesn’t actually fit with what you’re looking for.
